ansel taking forever to upload/manipulate images
#58 opened by Büro Ballmann Weber
Description
hi t.j.,
I very much like ansel because it usually feels like very native within ee. but what really annoys is that it takes forever to upload/manipulate new images. when we upload more than two or three images our backend will become unresponsive for minutes.
compared to that the years-old channelimages feels like a young bambi jumping through the woods. why can I batchupload 50 images in channelimages, save the entry and be back instantly when ansel takes 5 or more minutes for the very same images and different versions (manipulations)?
regards, matthias

Hi Matthias,
Channel Images and Ansel aren't really a 1 to 1 comparison. On entry save, Ansel resizes as necessary and optimizes the images that are in the field. The larger the image, the more work it takes for PHP to do this. And unfortunately PHP is really slow at working with images in the manner that Ansel does.
I don't disagree that things can and should be done to try to mitigate this problem. I have vague plans to process Ansel images via AJAX calls and some sort of alert overlay asking the user to wait while this process takes place, but I can't say when I will be able to do that.

hi tj,
I didn’t realize you already answered, sorry.
channelImages and ansel are very different – and I’m so happy for alternatives since channelimages was pretty much the only options for a long time. but now ci feels really dated and we want to use ansel more on our client’s websites.
but since they are used to channelimages our test runs didn’t work well because they thought the whole ee crashed after they tried uploading a handful of images via ansel. most of our clients are mueums, galleries and retailers that work with image files which are big enough to handle retina-hd as well (4000px by 3000px as a sourcefile for ee).
so from a daily perspective we had no success in replacing channelimages with ansel because our clients needed a speedy daily routine instead of the benefits another image tool could bring.
therefor it would be really great if there will be a way to speed ansel up in the future. please let us know :-)
